Fila at Eyes on Petone
What do Italian underwear from 1911, Swedish tennis #1 Björn Borg and Aussie #1 Ash Barty, LL Cool J and Tupac, vegan sneakers, and a Petone optometrist have in common?
Fila may be known for sportswear but that hasn’t stopped it from breaking into the world of streetwear and everyday fashion. Fila started making sports shoes designed for a range of activities such as basketball and mountaineering, but soon these shoes could be seen everywhere. Fila eventually branched out even further, creating lines of shorts, sweatshirts and even a range of vegan sneakers.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Fila also became popular among Hip-Hop and R&B artists. In the 80s, tracksuits were first worn as a casual outfit, appearing in music videos of various artists, including LL Cool J, Run DMC and Tupac Shakur.
Like Fila sportswear, Fila eyewear includes pops of colour and distinctive details in a variety of classic and contemporary styles.
